Special events at the Loup on March 4 and March 11! Check out the poster and our Events page:

The following is an editorial aired Feb. 2017. Please forgive the all caps. I do radio scripts in caps.

RECENTLY, THIS RADIO STATION HAS BEEN RETHNKING WHETHER WE SHOULD CARRY SOME SORT OF SYNDICATED NEWS FEED.
I DID PUT A PUBLIC CALL OUT FOR OPINIONS AND WAS PLEASED TO HEAR FROM LISTENERS BUT IN THE END I HAVE DECIDED TO TAKE A DIFERENT TACK.

LET ME WALK THRU SOME OF MY THINKING ON THIS.

FIRST, I FIND ATTACKS ON THE PRESS A THREAT TO MODERN DEMOCRACY, A HEALTHY PRESSS IS ESSENTIAL, THE PRESS NEEDS TO BE INDEPENDENT AND FREE TO REPORT.

THE ALTERNATIVE IS A STATE RUN PRESS.

SECOND, I PREFER, AND SUGGEST, READING YOUR NEWS. READING ALLOWS US TO TAKE INFORMATION AT A DIGESTIBLE RATE. MULLING IT OVER AND PUTTING IT INTO CONTEXT IS ESSENTIAL TO THINKING.

THAT SAID, I DO SUBSCRIBE TO DIGITAL EDITIONS OF MY NEWSPAPERS AND MAGAZINES, AND THE SAVVY ONES ADD IN VIDEO AND SOUND BITES, BUT I LIKE TO HAVE THE BIG STORY AVAILABLE FIRST.

THIRD, WE NEED TO SUPPORT OUR SOURCES.
IT’S BEEN A TOUGH COUPLE DECADES FOR NEWSPAPERS AND MAGAZINES.
QUANTUM LEAPS IN TECHNOLOGY HAS LED TO - 65% OF AMERICAN ADULTS USING SOCIAL MEDIA AS NEWS OUTLETS.
THAT’S FACEBOOK, YOUTUBE, TWITTER, AND REDDIT, IN THAT ORDER.
NOT SAYING THOSE ARE THEIR ONLY SOURCES, BUT I THINK IT LEADS TO CLAIMS AND COUNTER CLAIMS OF “FAKE NEWS”.

RATHER THAN ADD TO THE DIN, “THE ROOT” IS ENCOURAGING LISTENERS TO INFORM YOURSELF - BE A PART OF THIS DEMOCRATIC EXPERIMENT.

AND WHILE WE WILL NOT BE USING SOME SYNDICATED NEWS FEED, WE ARE BE THE LOOK OUT FOR CONTENT AND WILL ALWAYS PASS IT ALONG.

Scott WaichlerI support your decision Don. I prefer to get my radio news from NPR. I just wish the Methow would be NWPR affiliate instead of KPBX. The latter is too Spokane centric and I am weary of the "Simpering Fop."

Lindsey BrysonI think it would be too much work for you Don, but still a good idea. I do very much like your other sponsored shows like E-Town and ATK, but I miss Democracy Now! Thank you so much for being the voice of the valley! We appreciate you!

Garrett BaespflugWish there was a way to listen to the station in western Washington, always tune in whenever camping in the Methow. I respect all of what you say here, the attacks on the press seem very Orwellian, especially when you put it in the context that the alternative is a state run press. I do wish more credible newspapers and magazines would lean toward a more video centered direction, because although I also support thoroughly reading news, unfortunately the upcoming generations don't. Most are fixated on visuals and don't care to read more in depth articles or citations. In a comment above you say that after viet nam you felt your government doesn't care for you. After recent events I think that's becoming clear to a lot Americans as well. Thank you for encouraging listeners to actually be informed!

Sarah Jo LightnerThere is a great podcast called Reveal, that is put on by the center for investigative journalism. It is not necessarily daily news but it is great journalism.

Kirsten CookI agree, I prefer to read. KTRT has replaced NPR completely at our house since the election, and quite honestly the audio news fast has been good for our mental health. We listened to a lot of NPR! Mystery Motel commentary has been awesome tho!

Mary KiesauI do miss having Democracy Now on the air but I get my news from multiple sources online and am okay with you not airing a syndicated news I suppose. :-)

Kellie ConnSo is this going to be a leftist news feed, FAKE news, or True American News? Don't be a pretender.

Rob BrooksDon, I read the Wenatchee World, Omak/Okanogan Chronicle, and the Methow Valley News. I also get plenty of news from online sources. I am very happy with the programming KTRT broadcasts, and don't see any need for adding a news feed.

Letitia WerleDid I hear that right? Six years to get an approved frequency slot? Can you expound on the reasons for such a lengthy process?

Mary McFaulNice profile, Don. I depend on your steady voice of reason on a daily basis. And on the odd occasion when The Root falls off the airwaves for a short while, I'm a bit of a wreck until your return.
