Ah yes, summer has made it’s presence felt just in time for the 26th annual Winthrop Rhythm and Blues Fest. Amongst this years hot line up is Dumpstaphunk, Ivan Neville’s monster of a New Orleans funk band. Dumpstaphunk, this years seCRet lOCation pick for, Band Not to be Missed.
Formed by Ivan Neville, son of Aaron Neville, in 2003, Dumpstaphunk debuted at the one and only, New Orleans Jazz Festival. They’ve been regulars on the festival circuit (Bonnaroo, High Sierra, New Orleans Jazz…) since. Band members seem to enjoy the festival atmosphere, the different folks they meet, and the sometimes sketchy travel arrangements. Adventure comes in many forms.
The rhythm section has a solid foundation in the double big-bottom-end bass section of Nick Daniels and the legendary Tony Hall. Cousin, Ian Neville slays with his staccato wah wah guitar solos and syncopated stabs of rapier guitar riffs. Big hitter, Nikki Glaspie, first made her presence in the music world known, as the drummer in Beyonce Knowles all girl backing band, Suga Mama. A position she had to win, in a talent contest put on by Beyonce. A last woman standing event.
Voted “New Orleans Best Funk Band” in 2007 by Offbeat Magazine and hailed as “…the best funk band from New Orleans right now.” by the NY Times, also in 2007. Politically and socially charged lyrics, superb musicianship, and New Orleans genre hopping funk all blended together in one big messy stage presence. Be sure to bring your dancing mojo for this band.
“Paper Chasing Brittany” (Everybody Wants Sum) opens with a blistering bass line then settles in to a syncopated funk line with big bottom and jabs of organ and wah wah guitar.
“Livin Ina World Gone Mad”, off of Listen Hear, charged with strong social lyrics questioning things like the inequality between the ‘hood and Hollywood. Ends with a chanting chorus overlaid with a wailing guitar solo and a pounding so low down it comes through your feet and touches your dance button. No… this stuff mashes the dance button!
Dumpstaphunk takes the stage on Sunday the 21st. I’ll see you down in front, all hot and sweaty, like we was in Tipatina’s.
